Environment dominates Labour activity

There was a noticeable drop in the rates of lung cancer with increasing distance from the Marsa Power Station, according to studies.

The study was quoted by Dr Bonnici, a resident of the harbour area, who said that the statistics were significant up to 2km from the station, which is to be closed down within 2 years.

The activity in Fgura kicked off with comments from a Fgura resident who spoke about the inconvenience caused by black dust which had to be cleaned up - but said that the danger posed to health by pollution in the air that was not visible was more worrying.

Environment spokesman Leo Brincat then took to the stage, insisting that the only reason that tests were not being carried out which could identify the origins of the dust was because the authorities did not want the truth to emerge. He also said that it appeared that the Climate Change Report, which was drafted in 2008, was changed to accommodate the BWSC contract, as a recommendation to change to gas oil was removed in the final version which was released in October 2009.

MEPA will decide on the Delimara power station extension, which was awareded to BWSC, on Thursday.
